AVOID GAS PAINS
It's no secret that gas prices have spiraled. Not only is gas straining budgets of Americans but together with increased cost of goods and services, it is creating hardships. There is a gas crisis in America.
There is plenty of advice on saving gas. Some suggestions are myths perpetuated from one publication to the next. Unscrupulous marketers also prey on the public with fraudulent offerings and false promises.
Misconceptions abound regarding touted MPG claims for fuel efficient vehicles. The purpose of my website is to makes sense of expert advice and shed light on claims. I’ll also offer my common sense approach to avoiding gas pains at the pump. A word of warning……. Some of my advice contradicts other experts.
If gas prices are creating a hardship and you’ve tried popular advice with minimal or no results, your problem may lie elsewhere. As you begin to understand my approach, you’ll understand how much gas you’ve been wasting.
Gas Crisis in America

Jim Chiodo
“It’s not how fast you go but how fast you go fast.”
Joe is in trouble. A factory closing tripled his miles to work and he cannot afford gas. He kept his older car in top shape and followed expert advice, checked tire pressure, removed excess weight, closed windows and didn’t speed. His results were dismal.
His solution was to buy a more fuel efficient car, thinking gas savings would offset an added car payment. This decision was flawed because he didn’t know his current MPG and allowed a salesman to compare his current costs against a newer car using highway mileage estimates. Unfortunately, Joe’s commute has few highway miles and savings didn’t happen. Joe is worse financially than before. Where did he go wrong? Joe compared apples to oranges and didn’t understand how he wastes gas.
Joe is an aggressive driver. He of course would dispute that. “He just keeps up with traffic”. Sadly, Joe, like many drivers doesn’t realize acceleration and its relationship to wasted gas. He didn’t change his habits and didn’t realize the disparity between highway and local conditions, so mileage results in the newer car were almost as bad as those on his old car.
Help for Joe and others
This website is for Joe and others like him. It will help him realize where they are wasting gas. With minimal effort, concepts here can effectively increase MPG on any car by 10%. That reduces gas cost by $.40 cents (assume $4/gal). A complete understanding of my techniques may allow 25% or more improvement, which translates into a $1.00 per gallon saving. Sound astounding? Would you like to exceed EPA highway estimates for you vehicle while driving mostly in local, stop-and-go conditions? I do this every day.
Typical story of Americans dealing with pain...
I am a “gas analyst.” My knowledge doesn’t come from an engineering degree or connection with the auto or oil industry. It is from 40+ yrs of driving and application of common sense logic. My techniques result from 15 yrs, of observations, testing and experimentation on actual highways. I also draw on some testing by Consumer Reports and Edmunds although some of my advice differs.
Note I do not necessarily say “slow down”. Speed is rarely a mentioned in my advice. It is even possible in my own travels to exceed the Michigan 70 MPH limits and my mileage does not suffer. “It’s not how fast you go. It’s how fast you go fast”. When you look day-in-day-out averages, I attain mileage results that are approaching the highway estimates, yet my highway miles are minimal. Adhering to my advice creates a “go steady” environment instead of “stop and go”.
In addition to the tips found here, I offer a program to re-educate drivers young and old, enabling
them to save money. Anyone, driving any vehicle can improve gas mileage by 10%. With practice, diligence and depending on your current driving
style, 25% is possible.
In addition to saving money, I firmly believe I can save lives. This applies to everyone but particularly teen drivers. I like to point to statistics which prove my techniques are safer, but I can’t. Once you integrate my techniques into your habits, the safety aspect will become intuitive to you. It is also an incentive to parents to change their driving behavior because children learn from example.
